PgMP panel review

Also called: PgMP panel assessment · PgMP experience-summary review

By Sanjeev Kumar, Founder · Reviewed 17 Sept 2026

Definition

A PgMP panel review is PMI’s required evaluation of a candidate’s experience-summary responses by qualified external programme-management experts, completed after application acceptance and payment, before exam scheduling. It tests documented programme leadership, not test-taking ability, a PMI audit or automatic approval.

In practice

  • A PgMP panel review evaluates documented programme-management experience, while the separate exam evaluates answers to scenario-based questions.
  • A conditional PMI audit checks supporting documents, so an audit and a panel review should not be treated as the same stage.
  • Passing the panel review permits exam scheduling, but candidates must also pass the examination to earn PgMP certification.
  • Application feedback can improve clarity, but it cannot create qualifying experience or replace the independent assessment.

What the panel evaluates

The panel review uses the candidate’s experience-summary responses. PMI describes the reviewers as external subject-matter experts with active relevant programme or portfolio certifications. The review is therefore a professional-experience assessment rather than a test of multiple-choice speed.

What happens after submission

The sequence is application documentation, a possible audit, application acceptance and payment, panel review, then exam scheduling after a successful panel result. Candidates who are selected for audit have 90 days to provide the requested documentation.

What to prepare

Prepare accurate education and experience records for the application. Keep audit-supporting documentation available, and make the experience responses clear enough to show the programme-management work being assessed. For the wider route, see the related terms below.

The panel assesses experience, not test-taking

As of September 2026, PMI’s PgMP certification page says volunteer PgMP-certified program managers assess professional experience through a candidate’s summary responses after payment. The separate examination has 170 questions and a 240-minute time limit.

A PgMP panel review is not an audit. An audit is conditional and checks requested documentation, while the panel evaluates the candidate’s essay-style experience responses. A PgMP panel review is also not a replacement for exam preparation, because candidates must complete both the panel process and the examination to earn the credential.

Five actions before the exam

Candidates document education and professional experience in the online application. If PMI selects an application for audit, the candidate submits the requested supporting documents within 90 days. After application acceptance and payment, the panel assesses the experience responses. Passing the panel enables exam scheduling.

A worked decision

A candidate selected for audit has 90 days to submit requested documentation, such as degree evidence and supervisor or manager signatures for recorded experience. The practical decision is to gather and check those records before focusing on the later 170-question, 240-minute exam. Passing the panel can unlock scheduling, but it does not itself earn the PgMP credential.

Candidate responsibilities

  • Document the required education and professional experience in the PMI application.
  • Submit requested audit documentation within 90 days if PMI selects the application.
  • Make the experience-summary responses specific enough for external programme-management experts to assess.
  • Treat panel approval as the gate to exam scheduling, not as the final certification decision.

Application feedback can help organise truthful evidence and clarify a draft, but it cannot replace qualifying experience, an audit response, the independent panel assessment or the examination.
